Cross-country cycling (XC) is defined by the terrain on which it is performed and the most popular of the four. XC courses and trails consist of a mix of rough forest paths and singletrack (also referred to as doubletrack depending on width), smooth fireroads, and even paved paths connecting other trails. Riding or racing is also only deemed cross-country if the technical complexity of the trails is easy or moderate.
Olympic XC (XCO) is an event is held on a circuit of ideally 5-9 km in length of predominantly single and double track trail. The riders complete a set number of laps on the course of varying distances. The racer with the fastest time, or the first to cross the finish line wins.

The Powell River XC race will be on the same course as 2011. The start and finish will be at the Open Air Market again at McLeod Rd. and Padget Rd. The start is only a 3.5 km ride up the hill from the ferry so Vancouver Island racers have the option to ride onto the ferry. Islanders will be able to register on the ferry. The route up to the race will be marked. The Outdoor Market will be underway so expect to start the race to the sounds of some old fashion Powell River Blue Grass. The will be some food vendors in the Market as well.
The course is 6.7 km loop using the Enchanted Forest, Fred’s Trail, Blue Trail, 13 Slurpees and the West Lake Trail. Any climbing will be at the beginning on a gravel road with the bulk of the course on single track and some double track. The racers all thought the course was great last year and we have been working on the trails so things are looking good. We have been able to get some great prizes through the local bike shops and we look forward to seeing you again this year.
Since the ferry is an integral part of the event, we are working our schedule to fit with the 10:10am Little River (Comox) Ferry.
