Hornby Island Bike Fest June 15/16th 2019
This info was updated April 14th. Check out the HIMBA website for the most up to date info on the event.
BikeFest 2019 seeks to capture the many facets of MTB racing in one super fun event. The historic BikeFest had 4 separate events–XC, DH, Trials, and Dual Slalom–all crammed into one weekend. It was a lot of fun, but pretty hectic. BikeFest 2019 will see all of those separate events rolled into one super fun two-day race. Participants will pay a single entry fee and get two days of racing with seven sections for experts and 6 for Intermediate and Beginner. (if you make the Dual Slalom elimination rounds you will get even more racing) Riders will take part in all events, using the same bike and setup.
We’re going to use chip timing like an Enduro, but final scoring will be based on your placing in each stage, not your overall time. The idea is to level out the importance of each stage, making the short stages worth the same as the longer ones. The goal is to have the least number of points at the end of the weekend.
As an example: if your time on Stage One–Dual Slalom Qualifying–puts you in 1st place, you will pick up one point. if you placed 7th in Stage 2–Trials–that’s seven more points added to your score. Your 12th place in Stage three, the Short Track XC, will add twelve points, etc. The lowest score at the end of the weekend are the overall king and queen of the mountain winner. In addition we will recognize the top placings in each of the BikeFest sections. In all of the years BikeFest took place, we only ever had one person do all four events. That was Kevin Shealer, and we dubbed him “king of the Mountain for his efforts.
BIkeFest 2019 will take place June 15-16 in Strachan Valley on Hornby Island. (https://goo.gl/maps/ZwhmsQLqABS2)
Registration (NOW OPEN)
There will only be 200 spots, sorry we’re not trying to be exclusive, it’s a matter of logistics. We only have access to 200 timing chips through the island Cup Timing system and we want to make sure that there’s enough time for all riders to complete all sections without feeling rushed.
It will be pre-registration only. Entry fee will be $75 and $45 for youth (U12). That will get you two days of racing, BBQ dinner on Saturday and hot dog/vegi dog lunch on Sunday.
Youth Entry fee is $45, all other categories entry fee is $75
Recreational Women – Recreational Women will only do two stages on Sunday

BikeFest 2019 will be a two day 6 section event with an extra section for experts. Most of the sections will be chip-times. Accept for the Short track XC which will be Mass-Start separated by category) and on Saturday there will be Head-to-Head Dual Slalom racing for those who qualify. Four of the sections will be modeled on the BikeFest events– XC DH Dual Slalom and Trials. The remaining will be typical sweet Hornby descents.
The XC section will be a bit different: it will be a short track XC, with a mass start for each category. Riders will go head-to-head for two or three laps on a five to seven minute course that will have a good mix of open field, double track and single track. The good thing about basing the overall weekend results on points is that if you decide to take it easy on the XC, it will only cost you a few points, and not multiple minutes.
DS will take place on the BikeFest Dual course and will be chip timed. The top 8 riders will qualify for the two-rider, head-to-head elimination rounds to take place later in the afternoon.
Trials will be a mostly downhill section with a set of technical problems with slower ride arounds. It will be a short section–about 1 minute for fast riders. This will be a technical section over logs, skinnies and other obstacles but it will not require pure Trials skills like hopping on the back wheel. There will be no dab scoring, The rider’s score will solely be based on time. The idea would be that a skilled rider will be able to negotiate the technical problems faster than the longer ride-arounds, and are therefore incentivized to do the harder stuff.
DH will be run down Devils’s kitchen to Four Dead Aliens, to Tadpole, to Test Tube, to Chris & Brad’s, and finishing on No Horses.
Then 2 or 3(for experts) more classic Enduro sections to round it out.
There will be awards for the overall winners in each category, and also recognition for the top riders in each of the BikeFest sections.
